Formula 1 has not set foot in Austria since 2003. After 18 consecutive races from 1970 to 1981, the circuit was reduced before hosting another 6 races from 1997 to 2003. It then became impracticable and was bought and rebuilt in the following years by Red Bull’s Dietrich Mateschiltz. Renamed the Red Bull Ring, the track was reopened 15 may 2011 and hosted a round of the 2011 DTM season and one of the F2 Championship.
When it was announced in summer 2013 that a Formula 1 Grand Prix would be hosted in Austria starting 2014, the news electrified the entire F1 World. Tickets to the event were sold at a record speed.
